Petra

Petra on the George River below Helen Falls, Labrador

When Petra became pregnant I was sure that backpack trips in nature will not be possible for a rather long period of time. And I didn’t feel like going alone. But don't underrate women’s will. Petra being pregnant in the seventh month we went to high mountain regions with full luggage. Our trips became shorter and we needed a little more time, but that wasn’t the point. We had no problems at all and, consequently, after Lennart's birth we made our trips as a family of three. In the following years our experiences with backpack trips grew continuously. The tours during Petra’s second pregnancy and the first few tours including Sarah were no routine, but it became certain that our way of travelling is possible even with two little children. Petra’s pragmatism was and is essential to make all this real.

She always managed in a practical manner what I considered a problem: Which clothes and how much food supplies do we need for our children? I wouldn’t have found the right answers to such questions. But Petra also scrutinized my plans. Before getting into planning details she had to be convinced that we do not expect too much of our children. Even after a hard day in the canoe on a river or a hike with the backpack she is able to sort things out in the crowded and somewhat chaotic camp – a camp that has to be set up and broken almost every day. And her „outdoor-dish“ keeps a good mood within the group or brings it back. The Bannocks she cooks are so delicious that Indians, Inuit and tourists between Alaska and Patagonia praise them.
