|
Sarah (born
in 1989) surprised us very often. She was the "youngster" of our team and,
naturally, we considered her fitness as our common limit to conserve her
enthusiasm. But her often amazing capabilities were the main reason for us to
extend our tours continuously. At the age of four and with children's own lack
of concern she walked with her little rubber boots 15 kilometres a day across
Lapland, and a year later she crossed with us the Chilkoot Trail. At the age of
ten she dragged her own backpack (8 kg!) across the passes of the Inka Trail
4000 meters in height, reaching a maximum height of 5100 meters at the Huayna
Potosi - and native Indians, who carried the equipment of other travelling
groups, spent her ovations.
Like a clockwork mechanism she pulled the paddle through the water while a
several days lasting storm on the Noatak River tried to blow us upstream, and
she kept calm during the “hot dance” in the George
River’s rapids.
Sarah and Petra jointly took care of our excellent outdoor-cuisine.

We often
laughed at her dry remarks: |
|
"When we
are back again among human beings…" |
|
(At
the age of four, and within the width of Lapland facing very small food
rations due to miscalculation) |
|
|
"I
guess our last last hour has come now". |
|
(At the
age of six, when climbing a false route in Iceland.) |
|
"Dad, there is a bear over there." |
|
|
(At the age of 7, a black bear caught us by surprised while we had a bath in
the South Nahanni River.) |
|
|
"A wolf is
behind the tent" |
(During
our trip to Labrador, Sarah aged 13, we played cards in the tent at that moment.
Actually, the “wolf” was a bear.) |
